“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress, simultaneously.”
— Sophia Bush
Some days feel heavier than others.
Days when getting out of bed feels like lifting a mountain.
Days when the world feels distant, and my heart feels too loud to bear.
On days like these, I’ve learned to speak to myself with words I wish the world had told me. Words that feel like warm tea in cold hands. Words that remind me I’m allowed to rest here, even if I don’t understand why I’m tired.
Here are the things I tell myself on hard days:
“It’s okay to not be okay.”
Not every day will be bright. Darkness doesn’t make you broken. It simply means you’re human.
“This moment is heavy, but it’s not forever.”
“This too shall pass.”
— Persian Proverb
Feelings move like weather. Storms don’t last forever, and neither will this pain. For now, just hold yourself through the rain.
“You’ve survived your worst days before. You will survive this too.”
“You don’t have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you.”
— Dan Millman
Remember the nights you thought you’d never see morning? You’re still here. That’s your proof of quiet, undefeated strength.
“Rest if you need to. The world can wait.”
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.”
— Anne Lamott
You’re not lazy for needing rest. Your body and soul are asking for gentle care. Listen.
“You don’t have to have it all figured out.”
Healing isn’t linear. Growth isn’t a race. You’re allowed to pause, breathe, and simply exist without knowing your next step.
“You are loved, even when you feel unlovable.”
“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of another.”
— Charles Dickens
Even if you feel like a burden today, your existence carries meaning you may never fully see.
On hard days, I remind myself of these truths. Not because they erase the pain, but because they soften its edges. They help me breathe through the ache and keep my heart open to the possibility of tomorrow.
If today is heavy for you too, may these words hold your heart with kindness.
What do you tell yourself on hard days?
Share your words in the comments below. You never know whose darkness your light might soften.
With quiet hope,
Ms. Aloha D. Shore
